The MRSA Debate Goes On

April 11th, 2007 by Rhoda

I went to Jami’s apartment today to move her things  into storage and I thought to check her into a hospital but when I got there nothing was packed and she told me that the landlord had stopped by and wanted to give them a chance to keep the place. The atmosphere in the house was very calm and there were very few visitors while we were there. At one point Jami started to pick at the boil on her stomach and I said “Please don’t do that!” and she replied, “Why not? It’s not contagious unless there is puss coming out!” and  when I looked quizzical at her she told me that they had gone to visit Kirk’s new granddaughter he had told the nurse he was afraid to touch the baby because of the MRSA and the nurse told them that it was OK, that it could only be passed if the puss from a boil got into a cut on someone else. We discussed this calmly, both coming up with sources for what wee  were saying and  nothing was actually resolved. Jami said that she believed what other people with MRSA told her the most and I agreed and brought up all of the families I read about in MRSA Resources where the disease is passed all through some families.  The Jami really threw me and said that she believed that she had been carrying MRSA  when the  spiders bit her  and  the bites activated the MRSA in her system. I think I was stunned into silence. I thought we had gotten beyond believing that MRSA came from spiders.

We will continue our precautions with the disease until told otherwise by the CDC and everyone but I don’t see that happening with the families out there who are all sick in the household. We still change clothes and sterilize our hands and faces when we get home from there and especially before we touch out granddaughter. I am glad that they have a place to stay for the moment although I don’t know if they will pull off paying the rent at that place for long. I am afraid of all the misinformation being given by what should be reliable sources. They of course are more likely to believe a nurse in a uniform working at a hospital than just me. No medical degree of any kind, just a lot of obsessive reading on the subject. God help us.
